Street Foods In Toronto, Toronto Street Food

Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world and it has the food to show for it. You can find pretty much any food that you can think of in the city and that goes for both restaurants and street food. When it comes to Toronto street food there are tons of options, so many that it actually can be pretty hard to make a choice.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of our favourite Toronto street food that you just need to try.

Momo

Starting off this list with our favorite, Momo is a food that comes from Nepal and its northern neighbour Tibet. Momo is basically a type of dumpling that was traditionally filled with yak meat. However, in the modern-day Momo is filled with lots of different things, from different kinds of meats like chicken to other things like vegetables and even cheese.

Traditionally, Momo comes steamed however this can take some time, which is why when you encounter Momo on the streets of Toronto or at a festival it will more like come fried rather than steamed, as that is a quicker way of cooking.

Come give our menu a try to see what all of the hype is about!

Hot Dogs

The next item on our list is a classic street food item. Hot dogs pretty much were the most popular street food item. It’s simple, easy to make and has so many options, what isn’t there to like. If you want a straightforward hot dog with some ketchup and/or mustard, that’s an option. If you want a veggie dog those are also widely available. Even more fancy sausages are becoming common Toronto street food.

Gelato

If you aren’t in the mood for a full-on meal but just want something sweet to eat, especially on a hot summer day, then Gelato is the way to go. Gelato is a frozen dessert that is pretty similar to ice cream but with a bit of a fancier aesthetic to it.

Gelato comes in a variety of flavours and usually features come chunks of fruit, cookies or even candy to add to the look and taste of the treat.

History Of Nepali Food

Nepali Food, Nepali Cuisine, Nepali restaurant, momo

While it has gone under the radar for a while, Nepali food is becoming more and more popular each day.

Nepali food is a gem that people in Canada and North America broadly are just getting into. With such fine Nepali foods like Momo, Dal, fried Papad, and much much more are the reason that Nepali restaurants are becoming more and more popular.

As one of Toronto’s primer Nepali Restaurants, we want to talk about the history of Nepali food and give everyone a new understanding of this cuisine!

The Influences Of Nepali Food

Nepali food is naturally inspired by what is readily available due to the soil, climate and overall geography of Nepal. Nepali cuisine is also influenced by the food of its neighbouring regions like Tibet and parts of northern Indian. These influences brought in different foods and flavours to Nepali cuisine like bamboo shoots, various fermented/pickled vegetables, and dried vegetables.

Popular Nepali Foods

This combination of what is abundant in Nepal and the influences of its neighbours has led to the creation of several popular Nepali dishes. The first and most popular of these is obviously Momo. Momo is a food that has experienced some influence from Nepal’s northern neighbour Tibet.

Momo is a type of dumpling that was originally filled with yak meat, however, now Momo is filled with all kinds of things, such as other kinds of meats, vegetables and even cheese.

Momo is also generally accompanied with some sauces, that are generally made out of tomatoes, cilantro, and sesame seeds.

Momo also comes in many different forms. Traditionally momo was steamed but today Momo comes in many other forms as well, including fried and being served in soup.

Other popular Nepali foods include items like Dal, a soup made of lentils and spices and served over boiled grain, Sel roti, Patre and many many others that you just need to try.
